Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
