The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
