Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
