The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
